Hilton Garden Inn-Waldof MD Honored with the prestigious Gold Hire Vets Medallion Award
November 8th, 2018 - As we celebrate Veterans Day, we are given the unique opportunity to reflect on the major contributions of veterans and their families, both at Shamin Hotels and throughout history. Today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced during an official award ceremony that Hilton Garden Inn - Waldorf Hotel received the 2018 HIRE Vets Medallion Program Demonstration Award, recognizing our commitment to recruiting, hiring, and retaining veterans. Our hotel earned the Gold Small Award, and is one of only 239 recipients this year of this highly prestigious and the only federal-level award for veterans’ employment.
On May 5th,2017, The U.S. Department of Labor announced it will establish the HIRE Vets Medallion Program to recognize employers who recruit, retain, and employ veterans, and who offer charitable services in support of the veteran community. The department established the program under the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act, or HIRE Vets Act signed by. President Donald J. Trump.
“Veterans give an incredible gift to this country, and that giving doesn’t stop when they leave the military. From technical know-how to leadership skills honed on the battlefield, veterans have a wide range of abilities that make them tremendous assets for the American economy and for any employer,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. “The Department of Labor looks forward to shining the spotlight on up to 300 large, medium, and small employers who make hiring veterans a priority and encouraging other employers to hire our nation’s heroes.” Awards will be presented each year in celebration of Veterans Day signaling to veterans that an employer is committed to and supports veteran careers.
In 2013, Hilton, inspired and driven by its founder, U.S. Army Veteran Conrad Hilton, proudly announced its commitment to continue building on this legacy with their new Operation: Opportunity to further embed veterans and military spouses into the fabric of the company's culture. The program has been incredibly successful to date, and in November 2016, Hilton reached its original goal of hiring 10,000 military veterans and their families – a full two years ahead of schedule. Now, they’ve pledged to hire 20,000 more military veterans and their families by the end of 2020.
Proudly nestled between Andrews Air Force Base, the home base of two Boeing VC-25A aircraft with the call sign Air Force One when the United States President is on board, and NSF Indian Head, the nation’s oldest continuously operating naval ordnance station, Michael Ghosh (General Manager) is committed to integrate his absolutely stunning hotel’s operations in this thriving community by deep seeding our support to recruiting, employing, and retaining America’s veterans and their families and it all started with Andrea Biggs (currently in Bahrain) and Breonna Ivory (reserves), both serving the U.S Navy. We’re proud to be recognized with this award, and hope you share in our excitement. We invite you to join us in sharing this news with your family, friends, and colleagues.
- This past December, many of our employees (from both corporate and individual hotels) donated both goods and time to FeedMore. FeedMore supplies food to the Central VA Food Bank, the Community Kitchen, and Meals on Wheels. This year our employees were able to work in distribution and stocking of donated goods, as well as contribute several hundred pounds of food! We are proud of our employees, and look forward to our next adventure with FeedMore. If you’d like to donate time or goods to FeedMore, you may visit https://feedmore.org/
